EdScape is an educational escape room platform designed to advance STEM learning for middle and high school students. Groups of 1-4 students enter the escape room, interact with virtual objects, and work together using their voices and avatars to solve puzzles and escape the room.
Built with WebXR technology, Edscape XR enables students in classrooms or at home to participate using PCs, Chromebooks, tablets, or the latest VR headsets.

Our ultimate goal is to build a platform that offers escape rooms for a wide variety of STEM related subject matter. Each subject matter will be called a “chapter”. In the future we may add chapters on geometry, photosynthesis, forces and interactions, and so on. We started with pre-algebra which will include 10 rooms. Each room will be a 20-30 minute session to fit within a classroom setting. Each chapter will have a single story arc, though the rooms can be played in any order.
In 2022 we were awarded an ED/IES Phase I SBIR grant to create a single room on Photosynthesis. We built an Escape room designed to evaluate and advance middle and high-school student’s core content knowledge of photosynthesis, aligned with NGSS HS-LS1-5 and NGSS HS-LS2-5 adhering to next generation science standards. The room was designed to take 20-30 minutes and to be completed in a single classroom session.
LEARN MOREThe escape room setting is a virtual lab overgrown with plants. The students are told (via voice actress) that they must make one particular vine grow to pry a door open and escape. To make the vine grow, students must figure out how to provide it with water, light, and carbon dioxide. There is a unique puzzle associated with each of these three reactants.
In 2023 we were awarded an ED/IES Phase II SBIR grant to create a single room on Photosynthesis. The results were positive and we were awarded a Phase II grant earlier this year to extend the platform to 10 rooms targeting 6-8th grade Pre-Algebra. Each room is designed to supplement classroom learning and target common core standards. Each room is designed to be completed by groups of 1-4 students within 20-30 minute play sessions in the classroom or at home.
Istation has 25 years of experience providing an all-in-one solution for online assessment, instruction, and personalized learning to PK-8. They will assist with middle school distribution + curriculum design.
The goal is to expand to cover the most important and in-demand STEM topics for teachers and our distribution partners. This includes expanding the existing middle school math to include high school math and building additional rooms for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
The current platform is built on WebXR and runs in the browser. For Roblox we would like to either port the 10 rooms we are making for middle school pre-algebra or explore building additional rooms from other subject matter such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, HS Math, etc.
